The Night Circus By Erin Morgenstern
I've been thinking about rereading this book for a while but I kept convincing myself that I couldn't when I owned so many books that I haven't read yet. And I was worried that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered. But I was having some trouble actually getting through any of the books I had been trying to read that I eventually gave in (obviously, or we wouldn't be here).
I read "The Night Circus" for the first time during my second study abroad after Caroline recommended it to me. And since it was a recommendation from my best friend and I got it in London and I read it while I was in London I knew that I was biased. Of course I loved it. And I was worried that reading it again it wouldn't be as good as I remembered it.
Then I sat down and read it straight through over the course of approximately six hours.
In short: my fears were unfounded.
"The Night Circus" is the story of a competition between two Magicians. The venue? A circus that is only open at night and appears and disappears without warning. In this not-quite-chronological story we see how the circus is created, what it becomes, and all the people it affects along the way.
Erin Morgenstern's writing is truly beautiful, I aspire to write something that will make readers feel the way that this book makes me feel. This story is about a great many things, like love, and how there is no one right way to do anything, but in the end what I took from this novel is that words and stories are incredibly important. And as I writer who often struggles to write, the reminder that all stories are worth telling is helpful to say the least.
I don't know how to say more about this book without giving too much away, so I will leave you with the blurb on the back, which made me want to buy this book instead of waiting to borrow it from Caroline...
The circus arrives without warning
no announcements precede it...
it is simply there, when yesterday it was not
XO, Ellen
P.S. Shout out to Caroline for recommending the best books <3.
And if you've already this book but are looking for more Erin Morgenstern in your life, her next book (The Starless Sea) comes out in November of this year and is currently available for preorder. I of course haven't read it because it isn't out, but I'm sure it will be wonderful.
