Hunger by Roxane Gay - CW Eating Disorders
In her book "Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body" Roxane Gay tells the difficult story of her relationship with her body throughout her life, from her experiences with trauma to her eating disorder. I'm not entirely sure how to talk about the events of this book without telling you too much about them, but all you really need to know is that this book is beautiful, but if you are sensitive to information about eating disorders it probably isn't the best book for you.
I really loved this book, the way that Gay wrote about the trauma of her assault and how it affected every aspect of her life was haunting and it felt familiar. Every time I read stories of assault and it's long lasting affects I have two conflicting feelings. On one hand I am heartbroken that there are so many stories like this out in the world. But on the other hand I am comforted by the reminder that I am not alone and that life does not have to end at assault. Someday I hope we won't need to write these stories, but for now I'm grateful that we have the chance to find solidarity by writing our stories and putting them out into the world.
Overall I would definitely recommend this book, it was difficult to put down. I would sit down to read and suddenly an hour had passed. But, if you have experience with eating disorders where reading about them would be difficult, then this is a book to avoid. No matter how much I loved this book, my recommendation stops when reading it could cause you harm. Stay safe <3.
Roxane Gay is an amazing author and I have loved all the nonfiction by her that I have read. Now to get into some of her fiction!
Happy New Year everybody, I'm sorry I haven't been as consistent during the past few months but I'm excited to get back into the swing of things in 2020!
XO, Ellen
